There are vast racial disparities in VC funding, we all know that. Just how bad is it? Well, black founders raised just 1% of all raised capital in the US in 2022 and 1.3% in 2021, despite making up over 13% of the US population. VC Investment Strategy of the Week

American Dynamism is an investment strategy pioneered by GP Katherine Boyle from VC Andreessen Horowitz which intends on investing in companies that work on combating American stagnation. Through institutional failure and loss of civic trust, the government lacks the tools to tackle rapidly changing and complex issues as evidenced by COVID-19 and supply chain crises. In turn, startups have begun stepping in where the government has failed to act quickly, which is the case in sectors such as aerospace and defense.

Startups that have supported this movement include Flock Safety and Hadrian. Flock Safety is a company focused on public safety, creating small cameras that identify cars and license plates to help fight crimes involving vehicles. These smaller and more affordable cameras are vastly superior to the current legacy models on the market created internally by the government. On the other hand, Hadrian is an aerospace company that is revolutionizing the way precision components are manufactured. Hadrian’s founder, Chris Power, noticed a lack of automation in aerospace manufacturing that could only be solved through re-engineering the entire production process prioritizing software and automation. A rapidly changing world creates white space for new start-ups to pick up where institutions fail, paving the way for American Dynamism.
